The Power of Paying Attention

There’s a lot of people talking, nowadays, but it sure doesn’t seem like there’s much listening going on. It feels like the noise escalates as people shriek to have their opinions validated and their beliefs heard. As the voices get louder, people stop listening.

The continual clamor on news channels, social media and even in neighborhood meetings reminds me about the importance of paying attention. One of my favorite stories from the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series exemplifies the idea that we all need to be heard.

The Bellman

My dad battled a rare cancer for more than 6 years that affected his intestines, stomach and liver. As Dad’s last day approached, I wanted to be by his side when he took his last breath. But that didn’t happen.

I was in Seattle for a speaking engagement, staying at the Seattle Airport Marriott Hotel. I’d shaved and showered, and put on my coat and tie when the phone rang. Thinking it was my ride to the convention, I picked up the phone and said, “I’ll be right there.” Fifteen seconds of silence later, my younger brother’s voice pierced the quiet. “Danny?” Shocked, I answered, “Paul? What’s up?”

Honoring the Military on Independence Day

I’ve had many remarkable experiences with military men and women during my time as a motivational speaker, but words can’t describe how I felt on January 26, 2017, when I was presented with the American Spirit Award by Maj. Gen. Garret Harencak.

The American Spirit Award is the Air Force Recruiting Service's highest form of recognition and is given to a civilian who has made a significant impact on airmen and the Air Force around the world. Many great leaders have been presented with this award, including Bob Hope, Dolly Parton and the Dallas Cowboys football team. I stand in awe of the people I’ve shared this award with.
