As a master storyteller, Dan has been published in over 50 million books, in 40 languages worldwide. Dan’s famous story, “Puppies For Sale” was made into an award winning film at Paramount Studios starring Jack Lemmon (winner of 22 film festivals!)

Military Service

Unfortunately, Dan has never been in the military. Consequently, he serves his country by volunteering his time and talents to motivate our men and women in uniform and help their families. Mathematically, Dan’s volunteer service to the Air Force, always donating his time, talents and personal resources adds up to delivering over 300 speeches – 216 of which were presented to over 108,000 airmen just at Air University!

Dan’s Volunteer Service to Commanders

Dan began volunteering his time and talents and mentorship to Commanders and General officers and Command Chiefs when he was the keynote speaker at “Corona” at the invitation of General John Jumper. Consequently, Dan was then invited to speak at every MAJCOM Four Star General’s Commander’s Conference throughout the world, which led to invitations to speak on individual bases for Commander’s Calls, Dining Ins and Dining Outs. Over the years Dan has spoken to thousands and thousands of airmen, their families and civilian contractors on every base in NORTHCOM, PACOM, USAFE, AFAFRICA (where Dan fired up the troops in Addis Ababa, and Arba Minch, Ethiopia) and on many of the bases in the other MAJCOMs.

For example, Dan spent two days, speaking 16 times, to more than 10,000 airmen at Shepherd AFB in Wichita Falls, Texas, and spoke 11 times over two days at Lackland AFB, to those who had been there one week, two weeks, three weeks, etc., through to those who were pinning on and graduating.

Volunteering To Visit the AOR

As a result of keynoting at General Jumper’s “Corona” Dan was also invited by Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force Gerald Murray to keynote his world Chiefs Conference, which started another service ball rolling as Dan accepted an invitation from Lieutenant General “Buck” Buchanan to travel to the AOR and motivate, teach, mentor and inspire the combat troops.

Dan’s first of 8 visits to the AOR was in February/March of 2005, where Dan spent 16 days, spoke 23 times on 12 bases/FOBs, and on the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier to over 30,000 of our brave men and women. After his 90 minute speech to 2,500 sailors and marines, Dan was invited into the ‘Bridge” where he drove the carrier for 30 minutes in the Persian Gulf, and after his tour through the eighteen decks and eating in the Admirals quarters, later took off from her deck to return to Al Udeid Base in Qatar. Nicknamed ‘The Lone Warrior,’ the Truman is currently the Flagship of Carrier Strike Group Eight engaged in our missions in Afghanistan, fighting ISIS in Iraq and Syria and maintaining peace in the Gulf region.

On this ‘Military Tribute Tour’ Dan visited and motivated the troops in Bagram and Kandahar, Afghanistan; at Al Udied Qatar, at Al Dhafra Air Base United Arab Emirates, at Ali Al Salem Airbase, Camp Buehring, Camp Arifjan, Camp Virginia, Camp Patriot, and Camp Doha in Kuwait; and at Camp Victory, Baghdad International Airport, Balad Air Base, and in Mosul, Basra, Kirkuk, and Tallil Iraq.

On Dan’s latest ‘Military Tribute Tour’ (18 days in July 2014) he and his fellow tour members David Archuleta, Dean Kaelin and Jason Hewlett, entertained and inspired the combat troops at Bagram, Wardak Province, and Jalalabad, Afghanistan, at the four major bases in Kuwait, in Bahrain, in Djibouti, and again in AFAFRICA in Ethiopia. FYI – on Dan’s Chinook helicopter flight from Bagram to Wardak Province, they came under enemy fire, with the side gunners returning machine gun fire from both sides of the chopper! (Sadly, if former NBC News Anchorman Brian Williams had not lied about him being shot down in his helicopter in Iraq, Dan would share his exciting and amusing story from the stage.)

Dan’s Total Number Of Volunteer Hours To The United States Air Force Exceed 3000 Hours (so far) Spent Speaking, Visiting And Entertaining In The AOR, And Training Airmen On Active Duty, In The Reserve And National Guard.

As a former athlete Dan worked the Air Force Academy Football Camp as a volunteer coach for Coach Fisher DeBerry, has spoken to the team several times over the years, and has been the keynote speaker at the Air Force Academy Character and Leadership Development Symposium three times – obviously always free gratis!

Dan’s Dedication to National Events

Because of Dan’s ability as an inspirational entertainer and popularity among senior Air Force leaders, Dan has served as the Master of Ceremonies at the 50th Anniversary of NORAD Celebration Gala in Colorado Springs, Colorado; was asked by former Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force James Roy to be a keynote speaker at the Air Force Association National Conference; and was invited by General Arthur J. Lichte, USAF (Ret) to keynote the annual Air Force Airlift/Tanker Association National Convention.

Because of his friendship with the Welsh’s, Dan was invited by Betty Welsh – our First Lady of the Air Force – to be the Master of Ceremonies at the Air Force Aid Society Charity Ball in 2015 and again in 2016, where collectively we raised over 1.2 million dollars to assist our Air Force families.

National Civic Leaders Board

Dan received a Pentagon Appointment from General Norton Schwartz – the Air Force Chief of Staff – to join his prestigious National Civic Leaders Board. Dan served with the Schwartz administration for two years and then through the transition into the new Chief of Staff, General Mark Welsh, where Dan continued to serve on this Civic Leader Board for three years. When finally put on ‘emeritus’ status, Dan was honored by General Welsh and Secretary of the Air Force Deborah James by being presented with the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal – the highest recognition and award given to a civilian for outstanding international and national service and creating relationships between the Air Force and the corporate/civilian world that benefit airmen and their families.

‘Corona’ Speaker – Again

Dan first spoke at a ‘Corona’ Leadership Conference for Four Star Generals and senior Air Force leaders for Chief of Staff General John Jumper in 2003. Because of his insights and incredible experiences, Dan again was the keynote speaker at ‘Corona – Fall 2014’ at the invitation of Chief of Staff General Mark Welsh III. And is always the case, Dan has now spoken to the Commanders and Senior Leaders Conferences at MAJCOMS including AETC, Global Strike, ACC, AFMC, AMC and the Air Force Reserve.

National Air Force Recognition

In 2016, Dan was honored as the recipient of the American Spirit Award presented by the Air Force Recruiting Services Command, joining previous recipients including legendary USO entertainer Bob Hope, famous ABC Radio broadcaster Paul Harvey, New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, country music superstars Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton, Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf, the NFL Dallas Cowboys organization, the MLB St. Louis Cardinals organization, and others.
